Bringing Flexible Packaging to a Traditionally Rigid Industry

The lubricant and motor oil industry has traditionally used rigid packaging like metal cans and plastic bottles, but these formats limit sustainability, logistics, and convenience. Mespack has now delivered a turnkey packaging solution for a leading Brazilian motor oil producer, Vibra, marking a key shift from rigid containers to flexible stand‑up pouches with a corner spout.

This project signifies Mespack’s entry into a new industrial segment, bringing the advantages of flexible packaging to motor oil while ensuring high performance, durability, and full integration.

The Challenge: Modernizing Motor Oil Packaging

The Vibra’s goal was to modernize its packaging strategy by introducing flexible packaging while maintaining the highest standards of product safety, filling accuracy, and line efficiency. The solution needed to:

  • Handle viscous motor oil with high precision
  • Produce stand-up pouches with a 45° corner spout for improved pouring control
  • Integrate primary packaging, secondary packaging, palletizing, and load stabilization
  • Be delivered as a single, fully integrated turnkey line

Moving into flexible packaging required not only the right pouch format, but also a reliable turnkey solution that could handle primary packaging, secondary packaging, palletizing, and final load stability.

The Solution: A Fully Integrated Turnkey Line by Mespack

Primary Packaging: Mespack H360 FED

At the heart of the line is the Mespack H360 FED, a horizontal form-fill-seal machine specifically designed for stand-up pouches with a corner spout.

Key technical highlights include:

  • High‑precision filling for viscous products such as motor oil (equipped with an FM4 mass flow meter for accurate dosing)
  • Filling volumes up to 1.5L.
  • Compatible with thermo-sealable recyclable films
  • High production speeds of up to 85–95 pouches per minute (depending on format and product)
  • A wide range of pouch sizes (allowing future format flexibility)

This solution ensures consistent pouch quality, tight seals, and precise dosing, which are critical factors when working with high-value lubricant products.

Secondary Packaging: MCP2 American Box

After pouch filling, products are automatically transferred to the MCP2 robotic case packing system, which is designed for high-speed, reliable secondary packaging.

Key features include:

  • Robotic pick and place technology that is optimized for flexible pouches
  • High-speed performance of up to 210 stand up pouches per minute
  • Advanced 3D vision system with laser detection to identify pouch position and orientation
  • Custom-designed grippers that use vacuum technology to ensure gentle yet secure handling
  • Flexibility to adapt grouping patterns and case formats

This system guarantees consistent case loading while protecting pouch integrity throughout the process.

Case Forming and Closing: American Case Handling

The turnkey line includes fully automatic case forming and closing equipment, featuring automatic case erection, squaring, and bottom sealing. It is compatible with a wide range of case dimensions and corrugated board qualities, ensures precise carton positioning for reliable robotic loading, and provides secure top sealing with adhesive tape for transport‑ready cases.

Automated Robotic Palletizing and Load Stability

The cases that exit the packing system are transferred to an automatic palletizing cell, which is equipped with an industrial robot, featuring a high‑load capacity of up to 315 kg and a reach exceeding 3,100 mm to enable flexible pallet patterns. The system incorporates a fork‑type gripper with servo‑controlled positioning for stable layer handling, along with an automatic empty‑pallet magazine that includes integrated safety muting systems.

Completing the turnkey line, is an industrial robotic palletizer that ensures precise and repeatable pallet patterns, while a shrink‑wrapped pallet system provides excellent loading stability and protection during transport. The end‑of‑line is further enhanced with a shrink-wrapping system for static pallets, thus delivering uniform heat‑shrink wrapping for maximum pallet integrity, improved protection (against dust, moisture, and handling impacts), as well as ready‑for‑distribution pallets suitable for long‑distance logistics.

As a whole, these solutions deliver a fully automated end‑of‑line process that reduces manual handling, increases safety, and ensures consistent logistics performance.

Why Flexible Packaging for Motor Oil?

This project clearly demonstrates why flexible packaging is gaining traction in the lubricant sector. Reasons include:

  • Material reduction compared to rigid containers
  • Lower transport and storage costs due to lighter and more compact packs
  • An improved sustainability profile and reduced carbon footprint
  • Enhanced user experience with spouted pouches for controlled pouring
  • Strong shelf impact and branding opportunities

Why Choose Turnkey Project?

  • One unique supplier and one unique responsible for the entire production line.
  • Saving time and money compared to gathering several suppliers and reducing the risk of integration.
  • Complete line FAT. Optimize installation & commissioning time as the complete installation has been previously tested at Mespack’s facility
  • Complete project vision and control from primary packaging to End of Line.
  • Common HMI look & feel for all machines of the line, operating with the same digital platform: Athena.
  • OEE maximized and accurate layout of the complete line.
  • Single point of contact for Lifecycle services

A Strategic Step into a New Industry

This Brazilian project is more than a single installation: it represents Mespack’s successful expansion into the motor oil industry, applying decades of expertise in flexible packaging to a new and fast-evolving market. With a single supplier, a fully integrated turnkey approach, and proven technology across the entire line, Mespack enabled the customer to innovate with confidence and efficiency.
