Unlocking New Opportunities with Inverted Spouted Pouches

Mespack introduces a high-performance roll stock solution for next-generation packaging formats

As consumer expectations continue to evolve, so do packaging formats. Convenience, sustainability, and functionality are no longer optional; they are essential. In this context, inverted spouted pouches are rapidly gaining momentum across multiple industries, offering brands a smarter and more efficient alternative to traditional rigid packaging.

To support this shift, Mespack has developed the H360 FED Inverted Spout solution, which was showcased at Interpack. It is a dedicated roll stock platform engineered to deliver consistent, high-quality production of inverted spouted pouches at industrial speeds. Developed in collaboration with Menshen, a global specialist in dispensing systems, this solution represents a significant step forward in flexible packaging technology. This solution can be implemented across the entire H‑Series range, from the H140 FE to the H640 FE.

A Growing Format Driven by Market Demand

Inverted spouted pouches are emerging as one of the fastest growing segments in flexible packaging. Driven by applications in food, personal care, and home care markets, inverted spouted pouches have an average CAGR of 7–8% and a projected value that could almost double between 2025 and 2035. Their success is not accidental. This format offers clear functional advantages:

  • Improved product evacuation as a result of gravity-assisted dispensing
  • Reduced waste for both manufacturers and end users
  • Enhanced user experience through intuitive handling
  • Exceptional shelf presence, as the pouch stands upright on its cap

For brands looking to replace rigid bottles with lighter, more sustainable alternatives, inverted pouches provide a compelling solution.

A Recyclable Flip‑Top Spout Designed for Stability and Sealing Performance

At the core of the H360 FED solution is a recyclable inverted flip‑top spout that has been developed in collaboration with Menshen; it is specifically engineered to meet the mechanical and sealing requirements of high‑speed roll‑stock production. The spout has been designed with a flat and sufficiently wide base, which allows the inverted pouch to stand upright, during transport and consumer use, in a stable position on shelves. This is an essential characteristic of the inverted pouch format.

The flip‑top closure ensures convenient, one‑hand opening and secure re‑closing, while maintaining reliable product containment between uses. From a technical viewpoint, the spout geometric and material composition have been optimized to be fully compatible with the H360 FED’s multi‑stage sealing process. This enables consistent weld quality, strong seal integrity, and long‑term performance. Furthermore, this combination of recyclability, functional design, and sealing robustness makes the spout an integral part of the overall system, thus supporting both sustainability objectives and industrial‑level packaging reliability.

A Dedicated Platform for High‑Quality Inverted Spouted Pouches

The H360 FED inverted spout solution has been conceived as a dedicated roll‑stock platform for inverted stand‑up pouches. It integrates forming, dosing, and spout application into a single, highly controlled process. With an output of up to 100 pouches per minute, the machine is engineered, even with regard to complex spouted formats, to combine production efficiency with consistent quality.

Precision Spout Application by Design

At the heart of the H360 FED is a fully integrated inverted spout top application system that was jointly developed with Menshen to ensure precise, repeatable, and secure spout insertion. The system includes a vibratory feeding bowl with an independent feeding channel, synchronized step‑by‑step positioning, and a servo‑driven spout insertion unit that is fully aligned with the machine’s film transport.

To guarantee optimal welding conditions, the solution incorporates a pre‑heating system for the cap base. It uses hot‑air technology that has the capacity to reach up to 450 °C, thus ensuring the correct temperature before insertion. The spout sealing process is completed through an additional dedicated sealing group, which is designed to deliver maximum strength and reliability. To further enhance process reliability, the machine integrates spout presence detection, camera validation, and automatic rejection systems. This ensures that only fully compliant pouches leave the line.

Advanced Inline Quality Inspection with ITI Technology

To further reinforce process control and quality assurance, the H360 FED can be equipped with advanced inspection technologies such as Mespack’s Inline Thermographic Inspection (ITI), which is powered by Spookfish. Integrated into the Athena platform, this solution uses infrared imaging and AI‑based software to perform a 100% non‑destructive, in‑line inspection of pouch seals, hence analyzing their thermal profile immediately after sealing. By detecting deviations related to seal integrity, contamination, or process variability in real time, ITI enables manufacturers to ensure consistent seal quality, reduce the cost of poor quality, and improve overall production efficiency.

Inverted Spout Capabilities for New and Existing H‑Series Machines

With this solution, Mespack enables brands and packaging producers to confidently adopt the inverted spouted pouch format, thus combining efficiency, product performance, and sustainability in a single future‑ready platform. In addition, for customers already operating H‑Series equipment, Mespack offers a dedicated retrofit kit that allows existing machines to be upgraded to handle inverted spout applications. This provides a flexible and cost‑efficient method to expand production capabilities without the need for a full new investment.
